The art of meditation is to develop and balance the qualities of samatha (ease/tranquillity) and vipassana (insight/wisdom).
These two interwoven qualities are often described as the wings of the bird of enlightenment, who can't fly without both.
Just the simple act of sitting quietly, bringing awareness into the present moment, will create calmness within the body, heart and mind. Calmness then creates the best possible conditions for insight to arise. With each new insight, calmness and samadhi (concentration) increase and as we become more skilful in our practice the two qualities naturally complement each other.
Establishing sati (mindfulness/awareness) of the body, breathing, vedana (feeling tones), mind and dhammas (phenomenological patterns) creates the ideal conditions for tranquillity and vipassana to arise.
the following freely offered meditations aim to help the establishment of mindfulness in the four foundations and are inspired by the satipatthana sutta, the anapanasati sutta and the karaniya metta sutta
