The Way of Direct Experience - A nine-day silent meditation retreat with Patrick Kearney and Louise Taylor
The Way of Direct Experience
A nine-day silent meditation retreat with Patrick Kearney and Louise Taylor
Friday 9th - Sunday 18th April 2027
Dorje Ling Retreat Centre, Lorinna Tasmania
We are sentient beings, intimately interwoven with the suchness of life, and yet, all too often, we find ourselves living in a world of thought, ideas, and concepts, mistaking them for reality.
When the Buddha taught, he did not ask us to believe, but to practice — to cultivate awareness and to know for ourselves. When we choose intimacy with experience, the dharma illuminates itself, not as concept but as something directly lived and recognised.
This is what we will explore together during this retreat, weaving our way between stillness and movement, practice workshops and dharma talks.
The retreat is suitable for both beginning and more experienced meditators.
Cost:
$1095 - single room accommodation;
$895 - camping
+ dana* for Louise & Patrick's teachings
Places are strictly limited
Enquiries:
If you'd like to attend the retreat but the cost is prohibitive for you, please contact us to discuss options.
*Following the Buddhist practices of generosity, the teachings are given freely on a dana (gift /donation) basis. Your monetary contribution enables Louise & Patrick to continue this work, and the dharma teachings to flourish.
Please read the important information including our cancellation policy below.
Louise Taylor has practised meditation for over 20 years and has been teaching since 2018. Louise is a founding member of Radiant Mind Insight Meditation and leads single and multi-day meditation retreats. Her teaching is grounded in the clear practice methodology of the Mahāsi Sayādaw lineage. She encourages practitioners to find a refuge in nature, enquiring deeply and compassionately into our shared experience of being human.
She writes: What inspires me about the dharma is its practical application of meditation and mindfulness that helps us navigate our tender, ever changing experience of being human. In this way mindfulness becomes a lifelong friend in the journey to clear seeing and freedom from suffering. My aim as a teacher is to support people to develop this practice for themselves and enjoy its cultivation of love and wisdom through residential retreats and ongoing guidance, for the benefit of all beings.
Patrick has been a full-time teacher of mindfulness meditation for a quarter of a century. He conducts residential and online retreats, workshops and seminars. He has studied early Buddhism at post-graduate levels and has a particular interest in the original teachings of the Buddha, before the invention of “Buddhism.” This allows him to bring the radical insights of the Buddha to our contemporary situation. He sees meditation as a physical practice that reconnects us with the felt world of our senses, allowing us to live our lives directly rather than through the cling-wrap of our habitual thinking.

Accommodation:
• The rooms and cabins at the centre vary considerably in character and comfort, from small rustic rooms to standalone cabins, and only a few have wood fires. As we'll be gathering in April, autumn evenings in Tasmania can be genuinely cold, and past participants have found the unheated accommodations quite chilly overnight. Accommodation will be allocated by ballot closer to the retreat, with any health or disability-related needs taken into account first. Whichever room you're assigned, please come prepared: warm layers, a hot water bottle, and an extra blanket or two will make a real difference to your comfort. Part of the retreat's simplicity is its rustic setting — we ask that you meet it with the same spirit of ease and acceptance we'll be cultivating on the cushion.
• All bathroom facilities are shared.
• Mattresses are provided. All bedding, including sheets, pillows and
blankets, or sleeping bags, needs to be provided by retreat
participants. See ‘What to Bring’ list below for details.
Cancellations:
We understand that circumstances change, and that people sometimes need to withdraw from a retreat booking. However, it is also important that we are given enough time to try and find someone to fill your place. Dealing with cancellations and trying to find someone to fill a place can take a large amount of time, which increases our administrative costs.
Retreat fees cover the basic costs of putting the retreat on. If you cancel and we cannot fill your place, our organisation is left to pay your costs such as food and accommodation. As a not for profit organisation with limited funds this exposes us to considerable risk.
• If you need to cancel your place, a full refund (minus a
$100 administration fee) will be offered up to 3 weeks before the
retreat.
• If the cancellation is less than 3 weeks before the retreat, you will
receive a 50% refund.
• Please note, there will be no refunds issued for cancellations on the
first day of the retreat.

Dāna:
The fee charged for the retreat covers food, accommodation, and Radiant Mind administration costs. Dāna is the Pali word for ‘giving’ or ‘offering’. In the Buddhist tradition, the teachings are felt to be of such great value that they cannot be bought or sold: they can be received and transmitted only as gift. In this spirit Patrick and Louise offer the teachings on this
retreat as a gift. Voluntary monetary gifts for the teachers, as a form of gratitude, is encouraged in response, according to personal financial situation. This is a declaration of mutual respect, and recognition of our shared human concerns and values.
We will provide a box at the venue for your dāna contribution. To offer dāna via EFT, the teacher’s bank details are below.
